As soon as the festival of Diwali arrives, cleaning of the house starts. People get busy in polishing the floors, windows, curtains and furniture, but during this time, cleaning the ceiling fans is often ignored. The dust accumulated on the fan blades may not be visible, but it can spread throughout the room as soon as the fan is turned on. Therefore, it is important to clean the fans during Diwali. If you are thinking that you will have to open the fan to clean it, then it is not so at all. An old pillow cover or pillowcase present in the house can ease your problem. This method helps in collecting the dust accumulated on the blade and also reduces the chances of dirt spreading around.

How to clean fan blades with old pillowcase

First of all, turn off the fan switch and wait for it to stop completely. Use a sturdy ladder while cleaning and have another person help you for safety. Now take an old pillowcase and slowly lift it onto the fan blades. Then carefully pull the cover from the base of the blade towards the outer edge. By doing this, the dust stuck on the blades will collect inside the pillowcase and prevent it from falling down. Repeat the same process on the remaining blades of the fan. After cleaning is complete, take the pillowcase outside, turn it upside down and throw the dust accumulated in it in the dustbin. In this way the fan can be cleaned without opening it.

If grease has accumulated on the fan then follow this method

Not only dust but also a layer of grease can accumulate on the fans installed in the kitchen or around the kitchen. In such a situation, just cleaning the pillowcase is not enough. First of all, remove dust from the pillowcase or dry cloth. After this, lightly wet a soft cloth and apply some normal cleaner on it and clean the blade slowly. Be careful not to spray the cleaner directly on the fan. Due to this the liquid can reach the electrical parts of the fan. Allow the blade to dry completely after cleaning.

Keep these things in mind while cleaning the fan

It is important to take some small precautions while cleaning the fan. First of all, turn off the power switch and start cleaning only after the fan stops completely. Do not pour too much water on the blades or scrub them hard, as this could cause the blades to bend or become unbalanced. Use a sturdy ladder instead of climbing unsafely onto a chair or table for cleaning. Switch on the power only after all parts of the fan are completely dry.

After how many days should the fan be cleaned?

There is no fixed rule for cleaning the fan. Generally, cleaning the blades once a month can prevent excessive dust accumulation. However, in homes where windows are open a lot, there is construction work nearby or there are pets, fans can get dirty quickly. In such a situation, clean as per need. If even after cleaning the fan, it shakes, makes noise or gives less air, then the problem cannot be only of dust. In such a situation, get the fan fitting and motor checked by a qualified technician.
