Pune: The Koregaon Park police on Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old man from Kamshet for allegedly using a fake UPI application to cheat a 37-year-old Yerawada resident of Rs 18,000 at an ATM kiosk on Oct 11. An accomplice is on the run.
The police said the complainant, who works as an executive at a private company in Yerawada, visited the ATM kiosk to deposit Rs 18,000 in his account using a cash deposit machine .
Senior inspector Vijayraj Doke said, “The suspects were loitering inside the kiosk and had approached several people, seeking cash. They claimed they needed cash for an emergency and that they didn’t have their ATM card with them.”
When the complainant arrived at 3.30 pm, the duo approached him too. “They promised to transfer the money through UPI immediately,” Doke said.
The complainant agreed and gave them the cash. “The suspects then used a fake UPI application that spoofed a transaction confirmation and showed it to the complainant,” he said, adding that no money was actually sent.
“After the duo left, the complainant checked his bank account and UPI application and realised he never received the money,” Doke said.
After he filed a complaint, the police traced one of the suspects to Kamshet, where he was arrested. “We have seized his mobile phone to understand how the fake UPI app works,” he said. “We are searching for Chavan ’s accomplice.”
