Sri Lanka has surprised the world by chasing the target of 430 runs against England in Rawalpindi. This is the second most successful run chase in the history of One Day International cricket. When the Sri Lankan team, chasing the seemingly impossible target, lost the wickets of Kamindu Mendis (18) and captain Kusal Mendis (0) for just 24 runs, the fans felt that only formalities were left but Avishka Fernando, Pawan Ratnayake, Dasun Shanaka and Janith Liyanage played the England band.
Avishka and Pawan Ratnayake rescued Sri Lanka from the initial shock by making a partnership of 166 runs for the third wicket. Avishka (97 runs in 83 balls) missed her century by just 3 runs. He was played by Jamie Overton. After this, Pawan Ratnayake made a blazing partnership of 133 runs with Dasun Shanaka. Pawan Ratnayake played an inning of 130 runs in 106 balls, which included 15 fours and 3 sixes. Shanaka scored 97 runs in 50 balls hitting 6 fours and 8 sixes.
After the dismissal of Pawan Ratnayake and Shanaka, Janith Liyanage took charge and led Sri Lanka to victory by scoring unbeaten 61 runs in 27 balls. Sri Lanka had to score 8 runs in the last over. Liyanage took a single on the first ball. After this, Josh Tong clean bowled Dunith Vellallage and Ishan Malinga on the second and third balls. Sri Lanka now had only 2 wickets left. Asitha Fernando hit a single on the fourth ball, leaving Liyange on strike. Now Sri Lanka needed 6 runs from 2 balls. Liyange hit the fifth ball found in the radar and sent it over long off, giving Sri Lanka a miraculous victory.
In the third match of the tri-series being hosted by Pakistan, England had scored 429 runs at the loss of 4 wickets when they got the chance to bat first. Harry Brook played a stormy innings of 202 runs in 116 balls. Will Jacques, Joe Root and Tom Banton also scored half-centuries, due to which England made a big score but it proved to be insufficient.
Brook completed his double century in 114 balls, which is the record for the fastest double century in One Day International cricket. However, this historic innings also did not work for England.
