Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes that while Spurs will likely manage to avoid relegation this season, the club must undergo significant changes ahead of the next campaign.
It has been another deeply disappointing year for Tottenham Hotspur. The north London club currently find themselves stuck in the relegation zone with only four matches left to play. While rival Premier League supporters are enjoying their struggles, Spurs fans are coming to terms with the grim prospect of seeing their team play Championship football next season. This comes just a year after they narrowly escaped relegation — a Europa League triumph doing little to disguise their underlying problems.
Redknapp feels that regardless of how the final matches unfold, Tottenham need to act decisively in the summer to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Speaking to FourFourTwo on behalf of iD Mobile, Redknapp said, “If Tottenham stay up, they need to hope for far better luck with injuries, because that’s really hurt them this season. Maddison needs to get fit, Dejan Kulusevski needs to get fit, and they’ll have to focus on strong recruitment.”
He continued, “They’ve brought in some good players, but never the top names. Look at Arsenal signing Declan Rice — Spurs simply can’t compete at that level. When Antoine Semenyo moved to Manchester City, everyone knew it was a smart deal. That’s the kind of transfer Tottenham might have pulled off if they had acted sooner, especially since he had a release clause.”
Redknapp added, “But Spurs are never in that conversation. They’re always shopping just below the top tier.”
Tottenham’s instability has been evident over the past year, having gone through four managers. They parted ways with Europa League-winning coach Ange Postecoglou last summer, replaced him with Thomas Frank in February, and then dismissed interim boss Igor Tudor after just 44 days in charge.
Now, Redknapp hopes the club will allow new manager Roberto De Zerbi the time and stability he needs, regardless of the relegation battle’s outcome.
“De Zerbi will do well, but it will take time,” Redknapp explained. “He’s a top coach, and if the club backs him, he’ll succeed. He doesn’t have a magic wand, though. They can still stay up because their rivals have tough fixtures remaining — especially Nottingham Forest.”
He concluded, “The gap is narrow, just a couple of points. But if they do survive, they cannot let this situation repeat itself. They must ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
