Mumbai: Major changes are likely in the Indian T20 cricket team after the ongoing Indian Premier League season,
The report stated that Suryakumar Yadav could be relieved from T20 captaincy when the selectors pick the squad for the upcoming series.
According to a report by The Times of India, the Mumbai batter has reportedly been struggling with poor form over the past year. He has also failed to make a significant impact with the bat in the ongoing IPL season, leading to concerns within the selection committee.
India are set to begin a new T20 cycle with the Ireland and England series, and the selectors are likely to bring fresh changes to the squad. The report added that Shreyas Iyer, who is currently leading Punjab Kings in the IPL, is being considered as the next T20 captain.
With the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympics approaching, India are expected to play several T20 series in the coming years. After India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Suryakumar had reportedly shown interest in leading the side at the Olympics as well. However, his recent lack of runs may affect his chances of continuing as captain.
Since taking over the T20 captaincy in July 2024, Suryakumar’s batting performances have not matched expectations. On the other hand, despite limited opportunities in the Indian team, Shreyas Iyer has impressed in franchise cricket with both his batting and captaincy.
India’s series against Ireland is scheduled to begin on June 26. Following that, India will play five matches against England and later face Zimbabwe in a three-match series.
