New Delhi: Delhi has reported its highest number of dengue cases in April in five years, highlighting that the mosquito-borne disease is no longer confined to the monsoon season. Experts say that rising temperatures, rapid urbanization, and changing weather patterns are allowing dengue-carrying mosquitoes to breed throughout the year.
Doctors warn that children are particularly vulnerable to severe dengue, as symptoms can worsen rapidly within days. Here’s what increases the risk for children, the warning signs parents should watch for, and simple measures families can take to stay protected.
Dengue is Now a Year-Round Concern
Traditionally seen as a rainy-season illness, dengue is increasingly becoming a year-round public health issue. Warmer temperatures and irregular rainfall are creating ideal conditions for Aedes mosquitoes to thrive in multiple seasons. Delhi is no exception. In April 2026 alone, the city recorded 52 dengue cases—the highest for the month since 2021, when 42 cases were reported.
Why Are Children More at Risk
“Children under 15 account for a large proportion of dengue cases in India,” says Dr Satish Shahane, Director & Consultant Pediatrician at Saanvi Children Hospital, Navi Mumbai. Young children, especially those under five, are at higher risk due to their developing immunity and more delicate blood vessels, which can lead to complications like fluid leakage, internal bleeding, and shock in severe cases.
Repeat Infections Can Be Severe
Dengue is caused by four different virus types. A child who has had dengue once can still be infected by a different strain, which may sometimes result in a more severe illness due to a phenomenon called antibody-dependent enhancement.
Other Risk Factors
Studies indicate that obese children and those with pre-existing medical conditions are at a higher risk of prolonged or severe dengue infections.
Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore
Early dengue symptoms often resemble a common viral fever and include:
Parents should seek medical attention immediately if their child experiences:
Delayed treatment can lead to serious complications such as shock or organ damage.
Protective Measures at Home
Experts recommend the following preventive steps:
With dengue now a year-round threat, early recognition of symptoms and proactive prevention are crucial to protect children from severe illness.
