Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On the eve of their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Punjab Kings' assistant coach Brad Haddin provided an update on captain Shreyas Iyer, who sustained a wrist injury during the previous game. Haddin expressed hope that Iyer would be fit to play against CSK despite experiencing some swelling from a hard hit.
Punjab Kings are looking to maintain their winning streak as they face a struggling CSK, who recently suffered a heavy defeat to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening match in Guwahati. Fortunately for PBKS, Iyer's injury, caused by a drive from Cooper Connolly, appears to be less severe than initially feared, allowing for a potential return against CSK.
Haddin shared details about Iyer's condition, stating, “There is no fracture, which is reassuring. The focus now is on reducing the swelling and restoring movement in his hand, so he should be ready for tomorrow's match.”
Haddin praised Connolly's performance in the last match, where he scored an impressive 72 not out off 44 balls, leading PBKS to chase down 163 runs after a challenging start at 118/6. Haddin noted, “We have been aware of Cooper Connolly's talent for some time. We were eager to secure him early in the auction and had discussed his potential before others could recognize his skills.”
Discussing Xavier Bartlett's development, Haddin remarked, “Xavier has shown significant improvement over the past year. Initially a new-ball bowler, he has now become a reliable lower-order hitter, as demonstrated in the last game.” Bartlett contributed with a spell of 0/36 in four overs and scored a quick 11 runs off five balls.
Haddin emphasized the team's strategic approach, stating, “We have worked hard over the last two years to achieve a balanced squad that can adapt to various pitch conditions in the IPL.” He added that they would analyze the pitch data closely to determine the best team composition for the match against CSK.
Reflecting on the team's performance so far, Haddin expressed satisfaction, saying, “We are pleased with our start to the tournament. While there is always room for improvement, we are happy with how the last game unfolded.”
