Music composer Amaal Mallikhad the internet talking last year when he shared a deeply personal post about battling clinical depression and distancing himself from his family. The post was later deleted, but the conversation it started clearly did not go away. Now Amaal Mallik has spoken candidly about everything that followed, and what he shared is honest and layered, and it felt that he wanted to open up for a long time.

Speaking to Zoom, Amaal Mallik revealed that the post ended up being a turning point in more ways than one. On the family front, he said his parents have genuinely turned over a new leaf. He opened up about his mother, who he described as the stricter of the two parents, someone who held back appreciation out of fear it would make her children overconfident.

But after seeing Amaal Mallik’s post, she became emotional and reached out wanting to have a real conversation, one that finally happened and made things easier between them. His takeaway from all of it was simple, and he put it plainly himself, there is no rocket science; everything can be sorted if people sit down and talk.

He also spoke about how the public nature of the post brought some unexpected revelations. People called his father, trying to create trouble, and certain individuals around them showed their true colours. Amaal Mallik said it was an eye-opener for the whole family in terms of who truly wishes them well and who does not.

Amaal Mallik had earlier spoken about this on Bigg Boss 19 as well, tracing back the root of the post to an identity crisis he was going through, a big argument with his mother and years of built-up emotions finally spilling over. Personal losses including a difficult breakup and the loss of his pet added to everything he was carrying at the time. His father, Daboo Mallik, also acknowledged that the family had taken Amaal for granted as the elder child and accepted their role in the situation. Despite still receiving the occasional negative comment online for speaking out, Amaal Mallik says none of it bothers him anymore, and that alone feels like a big shift.
