In recent years, quaint market towns across the UK have become a surprise hit among American tourists, who are increasingly drawn to their timeless charm, picturesque streets and cosy atmospheres. From cobbled lanes to historic architecture, these towns offer a slice of British life that many Americans find completely enchanting.

Social media has played a significant role in this newfound admiration, with platforms like TikTok and Instagram abuzz with videos showcasing these hidden gems. One notable enthusiast is Paige Wester (@p_west_), who recently explored the charming North Yorkshire town of Yarm-on-Tees, one many Americans may never have heard of. The American content creator has gained impressive popularity for her series "Let's tour... from an American girly," in which she travels across England and shares her reactions to British towns.

"This has got to be the cutest town I've ever seen in my entire life," Paige said. As she explored the historic High Street, she expressed FOMO, saying her "biggest regret in life" is not having lived there.

Commenting on the Yarm's aesthetic, Paige said: "I feel like a Hallmark movie could be filmed here, but an English version."

Paige also jokes about her shock at not seeing a Greggs - a ubiquitous UK bakery chain - immediately upon walking down the High Street. "I'm shocked I haven't seen a Greggs yet. I think Yarm is too posh for that," she said.

Instead, she sings the praises of a local cafe, Nossa: "Oh my God, that was amazing. If you're in Yarm, you need to go to this cafe."

Yarm lies on the southern bank of the River Tees in North Yorkshire. The town is uniquely situated within a tight loop of the river, which historically served as a natural defence and led to its development as a major inland port. While it sits within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, it is part of the borough of Stockton-on-Tees and serves as a gateway between the Teesside conurbation and the more rural North York Moors.

The town is surrounded by several larger and more famous neighbours that offer a mix of urban and historical appeal. To the north lie the industrial and commercial hubs of Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough, while the historic market town of Darlington is a short drive to the west.

The most striking is the Yarm Viaduct, a huge 2,280-foot brick railway bridge completed in 1852 that spans the town and the river with 43 arches. At the centre of the cobbled High Street sits the Yarm Town Hall, a distinctive Dutch-style building dating back to 1710.
