A popular shoe retailer has shut its doors at Salisbury's Old George Mall after more than 10 years in the same location. The Schuh store, which opened in May 2015 and provided over 25 local jobs, is one of several locations the brand has closed as part of a review of underperforming outlets, according to a company spokesperson.
Its closure follows the recent departure of stationery chain Smiggle which its store in the Old George Mall closed last month, fashion accessories brand Claire's, which shut its doors in November 2025, and The Body Shop, which closed in 2024. However, luxury home and body care retailer Rituals is set to open a new boutique at the centre next month and is currently looking for its new shop supervisor.
Signs appeared in the closed shop window directing them to nearby stores in Southampton (West Quay), Bournemouth (Commercial Road), and Basingstoke (Festival Place), the Salisbury Journal reported.
The sign reads: "Bye for now...You can still find your fave fits at Southampton, Basingstoke, and Bournemouth schuh stores."
A Schuh spokesperson said: "The UK retail sector is undergoing rapid transformation, shaped by shifting consumer behaviours and in response, Schuh is evolving to strengthen its position for the future.
"Schuh is making strategic decisions to adapt, including the necessary closure of a number of underperforming stores, among them our Old George Mall store.
"These decisions will allow us to focus on high-performing locations and enhance our overall customer experience. Customers can visit their nearest schuh store in Southampton or explore our full range online."
Founded in Edinburgh in 1981, Schuh has grown from a single independent shop to a major UK footwear brand, now with over 120 branches across the UK and Ireland.
The company became known for its colourful and extensive range of branded trainers and fashion footwear. The brand sells over 80 brands, including its own brand and other well-known shoe brands like Converse, Vans, Nike, Adidas, UGG, and Dr Martens. Schuh launched its own transactional website in August 2002.
After being acquired by Nashville, Tennessee-based Genesco Inc. in June 2011 for £125 million, Schuh expanded its footprint further, including opening dedicated children's stores and its first international location in Germany in 2015.
