The father whose anger had erupted at the Chief Minister of Bengal two days ago, today had his hands folded and his eyes pleading for justice for his daughter. The father of the Durgapur gangrape victim, who had angrily compared Bengal with ‘Aurangzeb’s rule’, has now folded hands and apologized to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This is the pain of a father, which is sometimes overflowing in anger and sometimes in helplessness. ‘You are like a mother, forgive me’ On Wednesday, the tone of the victim’s father had completely changed. He said, “Mamata Banerjee is like a mother to me. If I have said anything wrong in anger, I fold my hands and apologize to her. I bow at her feet a hundred times, but I also appeal to her to get justice for my daughter.” But this apology does not mean that her fight for justice has weakened. He made it clear that even today he stands firm on the demand for a CBI inquiry into the matter. So where did this whole ruckus start from? The root of this whole ruckus was the statement of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which added fuel to the fire. Talking on the Durgapur incident, Mamata Banerjee had said, “I came to know that she was outside the hostel at 12:30 in the night. Girl students living in hostels should avoid going out at night… Girls should also protect themselves.” Her statement was seen as ‘blaming the victim’, after which she started being sharply criticized from all sides. When the angry father said – ‘This is Aurangzeb’s rule. Hurt by this statement of the Chief Minister, the victim’s father got angry on Monday. He had said, “She (Mamata) is also a woman. How can she say such an irresponsible thing? Should women now leave their jobs and sit at home? It seems that Aurangzeb’s rule is going on in Bengal.” He had also said that he had lost faith in the law and order of Bengal and he wanted to take his daughter back to Odisha. However, after the controversy escalated, the Chief Minister had clarified that his statement had been distorted. So far, six people, including the victim’s friend, have been arrested in this case, but a father’s fight for justice for his daughter still continues – only the method has changed.
